Creating more welcoming

care for LGBTQ+ elders

SAGECare is a cultural competency training program for:

  • Skilled nursing facilities
  • Health care organizations
  • Assisted living communities
  • Hospice and palliative care
  • Long-term care communities
  • Home health providers
  • Anyone providing services to older adults

When surveyed, 9 out of 10 LGBTQ+ people feared discrimination in care settings if providers knew their sexual orientation or gender identity. SAGECare training helps service providers create more LGBTQ+-welcoming organizations—and SAGECare credentials help LGBTQ+ people find those trained providers.

Sage certification for Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRCs) is a recognition program that demonstrates a CCRC's commitment to providing high-quality care and services for LGBTQ+ older adults. Here's a simple explanation of what it entails:

SAGE Certification

SAGE (Services & Advocacy for GLBT Elders) is an organization dedicated to improving the lives of LGBTQ+ older adults[6]. Their certification program, called SAGECare, offers training and credentialing for senior care providers, including CCRCs[7].

Levels of Certification

SAGECare offers different levels of certification, with Platinum being the highest:

Platinum Certification:

- Requires 80% of employees to complete LGBTQ+ cultural competency training

- 80% of executives/administrators must complete 4 hours of specialized training[7]

Key Components

1. **Staff Training:** Employees learn about LGBTQ+ cultural competency, ensuring they understand and respect the unique needs of LGBTQ+ seniors[6].

2. **Inclusive Policies:** Certified CCRCs implement non-discrimination policies that protect residents and staff from discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity[6].

3. **Welcoming Environment:** CCRCs create programs and spaces that celebrate diversity and foster inclusion for LGBTQ+ residents[6].

Benefits

- Improved quality of life for all residents, especially LGBTQ+ seniors

- Enhanced mental and emotional health for residents

- Increased social engagement and stronger sense of community[6]

By achieving SAGE certification, a CCRC demonstrates its commitment to creating an inclusive, respectful, and supportive environment for all residents, with a particular focus on the needs of LGBTQ+ older adults.

Can someone explain what the term “SAGECare Certified” means as it applies to retirement and life-plan communities? We have seen references to it at our facility.
