Organizing Blood Drives

Blood Donation Events: They were a regular occurance before the pandemic, but haven't been re-instituted since. Thank you for this post that jogged my memory. I will suggest that we get them back.

Goodwin House Baileys Crossroads in Falls Church, VA has had an annual blood drive for the past 5 years. Our fifth drive will take place on site at the end of April in conjunction with our local hospital Inova. Attached is the Summary Outline which may be helpful to everyone thinking of having a blood drive. We ask donors of blood from our residents, our team/staff members and family members of our residents. Our last drive last spring donated 71 pints of blood. We are hoping to donate 80 this year. Our administration is very supportive of this resident organized event. Please see the attachment for our working document.

Has any retirement community offered a blood drive in which residents and staff can participate?

My community has a Blood-Mobile on site twice a year for a half day. They have been doing it for years. They get a good turn out, both staff and residents. We also have several residents who donate blood or platelets at the the blood banks fixed locations regularly. We have about 350 independent living residents, a larger community might be able to support a full day endevor.

We are considering a blood drive through Children's Hospital, which will come to our facility and handle all arrangements.

There is no upper age limit to donate blood, and we would be interested in hearing about any other CCRC experiences with blood drives.

Many thanks,
