Older New Yorkers Recognized for Service to Their Communities

New York State honored more than 100 older adults during Older New Yorkers’ Day 2026 for volunteer work and community leadership. The state Office for the Aging says nearly one million older New Yorkers volunteer, contributing an estimated 474 million hours of service valued at $13.2 billion.

The honorees’ work spans support for neighbors, community organizations, and local programs. Their recognition is a reminder that later life can include substantial civic contribution, whether through formal volunteering or everyday help to others. For residents of Life Plan Communities, these examples may also prompt ideas for sharing skills and building partnerships beyond campus.

What kinds of volunteer projects would make the biggest difference in your community?
