A Local Food Program Grows Through Neighbor-to-Neighbor Service

Herkimer County’s Office for the Aging recognized George Gullis for an “Outstanding Contribution.” In Ilion, New York, the free bag-lunch program he started grew from a few meals to about 85 lunches twice each week. The free supper he established runs twice a month and averages roughly 100 people per meal. Anyone needing a bag lunch can participate by providing a name and address, according to the report (Adirondack Almanack).

Gullis’s service also includes rides to community meals, grocery stores and medical appointments, as well as help with overdue bills, gas, food and household repairs. His story shows how steady, practical volunteering can build a local safety net around neighbors who need support. What volunteer effort or resident-led service has made the biggest difference in your community? (Adirondack Almanack)
